About Yulang

Yulang Indigenous Evaluation is an Aboriginal-led business that works with communities and clients to research and evaluate policies and programs that affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

We review and help develop policies that uphold the rights of and reduce discrimination against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

We work with communities and clients to design evaluations that can be carried out internally, and to design programs that are easy to evaluate.

And we write about health and justice issues.

We see our work as part of nationwide efforts to improve policies and programs that affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and believe it will contribute to an improvement in the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

When appropriate we draw on Ngaa-bi-nya, an Indigenous evaluation framework we developed, to ensure that the things that matter to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are evaluated, in ways that matter to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Yulang is the Wiradjuri word for ripple … we have used it to signify our belief that all we do has an impact, and that even small changes for the better can lead to changes both upstream and downstream.

Our principles are that in all our work, we:

  • build trust
  • are collaborative
  • are flexible
  • build capacity
  • offer cultural safety.

We also acknowledge and respect the core values of:

  • spirit and integrity
  • cultural continuity
  • equity
  • reciprocity
  • respect.[1]National Health and Medical Research Council. (2018). Ethical conduct in research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and communities: Guidelines for researchers and stakeholders. … Continue reading

And we also acknowledge that evaluations should, as described in the Australian Indigenous Evaluation Strategy, centre Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, perspectives, priorities and knowledges, and be credible, useful, ethical and transparent.[2]Productivity Commission. The two principals are Megan Williams and Mark Ragg. We are lucky to have wonderful group of people who work with us on selected projects – Demelza Marlin, Jack Bulman, Kenny Lawson and Sally Fitzpatrick. And we have an Aboriginal sounding board to provide guidance and wisdom from diverse perspectives.
