The Aboriginal Heart Health Grants (AHHG) program sits within the NSW Ministry of Health. It has funded research projects that are led by Aboriginal researchers and/or clinicians.
In the short term, the AHHG program is expected to increased collaboration between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal researchers and clinicians, with new or stronger relationships appearing, and new knowledge being developed. Researchers, clinicians and grant funders are expected to shift their thinking and their behaviour around both heart health research and collaborations between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.
In the medium term, this program is expected to contribute to the strengthening of research within ACCHOs, and increase the capacity of both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal researchers. Organisations involved in the program are expected to change their practices in line with their research. The program is expected to have influence on the actions of researchers, clinicians and grant funders across the sector.
In the long term, it is expected that their will be better programs to prevent and treat heart disease among Aboriginal researchers. More non-Aboriginal researchers should have the cultural capability to work with Aboriginal researchers and community members. More Aboriginal people will be working in research, including in heart health research.
The Ministry’s Office of Health and Medical Research has commissioned Yulang to work closely with it and with senior Aboriginal advisers. We are using our Mawang and Gulbarra tools to develop an evaluation plan, with discussions about the importance of Aboriginal leadership and Aboriginal governance.
