The First Nations Languages Education Program supports community language learning activities that increase the numbers of language speakers and educators. The Australian Government Department of Education has partnered with First Languages Australia to develop a national grant program sufficiently flexible to meet local language community needs. We have been commissioned to evaluate the program over a 12-month period.
The aim of the evaluation is to answer these four questions.
- Is the First Nations Languages Education Program delivering what it planned to in terms of its design, implementation and outcomes?
- What does economic analysis show?
- What are the relationships between communities and schools, why do they vary and how could they be strengthened?
- How could First Nations Languages Education Program build upon its strengths, and are there gaps to be addressed?
We’ve worked closely with an Evaluation Working Group to design a mixed-methods evaluation that takes note of the three ecologies involved – language communities, schools and government.
We’ll provide regular reports to participants – these will be uploaded soon.
And we’ll provide ongoing reporting that allows First Languages Australia and the Department of Education to adapt the program as it goes, rather than wait for 12 months.
