The NSW Government provides funding to and supports community-based organisations at selected sites around NSW to run the Youth on Track program, which has had the input of Aboriginal people into its design.
Young people aged 10-17 are referred to, or self-refer to, Youth on Track providers. The Youth on Track team builds rapport and trust with the young people, while seeking to identify and meet immediate needs. The team then works alongside with the young people in culturally safe ways to set goals. They then work with them to achieve those goals.
The funded organisations also work with families, communities and other organisations so that young people have the support they need in the community.
Youth on Track is culturally safe. It is empowering for young people and their families. Youth on Track teams walk alongside the young people and their families. The program is strengths-based and trauma-informed. It is transparent and community driven.
The program is provided in ways that are appropriate to the sites and to existing community supports. The NSW Government learns from funded organisations and Youth on Track participants and grows the program to meet need.
Yulang has been funded by Youth Justice to work with its team and with providers organisations to plan an evaluation. We are carrying out this work through visits to all nine sites, through a full-day workshop in Tamworth, and through regular focused meetiungs with an evaluation planning group comprising staff of the nine providers.
